ART 240 Introduction to Illustration Projects

My Work—Introduction to Illustration
These are all of the projects I worked on when taking ART 240 Introduction to Illustration
Master Copy Project
For this project, we had to find artwork from a "Golden Age Illustrator" to copy. There were three separate parts to this project—the line drawing, a value composition, and the final painting. The first picture you see is the original and the last picture is my recreation. It was challenging working with acrylic paints, especially because it dries a different color than you lay on. However, I am more than satisfied with the final result and realize that I strive to pay great attention to detail.
Book Cover Project
For this cover, we were assigned to make a book cover for the popular series The Lord of the Rings. We could only work with traditional mediums, so I decided to use gouache and acrylic paint. Even though it would've been easier to make a digital cover, I learned to admire and respect artists that still use traditional mediums to create illustrations.
Advertisement Poster Project
In this project, we got to work as a client and an artist. We were to come up with pitches for a poster we needed, something relating to music. At the same time, we got to work as an artist creating a poster for a client. This is the poster I made for my client for a Blanco White concert that would be held at BYU-I. The illustration is done traditionally, but I would have preferred to work digitally to create a more appealing collage effect.
Character/Environment Design Project
Last and certainly my favorite was the character/environment design project. We were in charge of creating a character design and environment to match for a classic novel. The classic novel I chose was Moby Dick and the character I illustrated was Captain Ahab. It was fun to explore the full process of researching, thumbnailing, designing, and refining.
